A recent project to design and develop an auto open and soft close door mechanism provides a great example of the benefits that rapid prototyping has to offer. The requirements for the mechanism were extremely demanding and it was clear from the outset that the solution would involve a complex arrangement of finely balanced components. Whilst the final production materials would have to be metal, the strength of SLS Nylon rapid prototype parts was sufficient to test the various concepts that we came up with.
The low cost compared to machining in metal allowed us to repeat this concept phase of the project many times in a very short period of time until we were sure of the best option to take forward. In total we produced 6 versions of the design as pictured above over a 2 week period and were able to achieve a fully operational mechanism in the PA12 Nylon material using steel springs and stainless heli-coils to strengthen the threads.
